Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about barcodes, formats, and label printing

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of data using parallel lines of varying widths (1D barcodes) or square patterns (2D codes like QR). When a scanner emits light onto the barcode, the pattern of reflected light is decoded into text or numbers. Barcodes are used across retail, logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing to track products, manage inventory, and speed up checkout.

Code 128 is the most versatile 1D barcode — it encodes all 128 ASCII characters (letters, numbers, symbols) and is ideal for internal SKUs, shipping labels, and warehouse management. UPC-A is a 12-digit numeric-only code required for products sold in North American retail stores. EAN-13 is the international equivalent with 13 digits. Use Code 128 for internal operations and UPC/EAN for retail products scanned at checkout.

For products sold exclusively online, Code 128 is recommended because it supports alphanumeric characters — perfect for custom SKUs like 'TSHIRT-BLK-L'. For products sold in physical retail stores (including Shopify POS), you'll need a UPC-A code (12 digits) from GS1. Shopify's product settings accept both formats. Our generator supports Code 128, UPC-A, EAN-13, and 6 more formats.

In our generator, switch to Batch mode, enter your values, and select 'Avery 5160' from the Label Template dropdown. Set how many copies you need per value — or click 'Fill sheet' to auto-fill all 30 labels on the page. Download the PDF and print it at 100% scale (no scaling) on Avery 5160 label sheets. Each label is precisely formatted to 1" × 2⅝" with correct margins.

Yes. Use our 'Copies per Value' feature in Batch mode. Enter a single value (e.g., your product SKU), then set the copies count to however many labels you need. Click 'Fill sheet' to automatically calculate the right number for your chosen template. For example, with Avery 5160, one click fills all 30 labels on a sheet with the same barcode.

1D barcodes (like Code 128, UPC, EAN) use vertical lines and encode data horizontally — they typically hold 10–30 characters. 2D barcodes (like QR codes, Data Matrix) use a grid of squares and can encode thousands of characters, including URLs and binary data. Most retail products use 1D barcodes. 2D codes are common for marketing (QR), shipping (Data Matrix), and mobile applications.

For internal use (warehouse bins, SKUs, asset tags), you can generate any Code 128 barcode for free using our tool — no purchase needed. For products sold in retail stores, you need official UPC or EAN codes from GS1 (gs1.org), the global standards organization. GS1 charges a membership fee starting around $250/year depending on your company size.

Our batch mode supports 7 label templates: Avery 5160 (30/sheet, the most popular address label), Avery 5163 (10/sheet, shipping labels), Avery 5167 (80/sheet, tiny labels), and 4 thermal printer formats — 4"×6" (standard shipping), 4"×2" (shelf labels), 3"×2" (product labels), and 2"×1" (price tags). All templates generate pixel-perfect PDFs you can print directly.
